Stuart Gray has urged whoever replaces the suspended Chris Maguire against Watford this weekend to make the shirt their own.
Maguire will sit out the visit of the Hornets to Hillsborough after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign against Leeds last time out.
Gray says it is unfortunate Maguire will now miss out having scored his second of the season at Elland Road.
“Chris has gone out on a high, scoring that great goal at Leeds,” Gray said.
“But the five bookings have caught up with him.
“He’ll probably be looking over his shoulder now wondering if he’s going to get back in the team straight away.
“The person that comes in has a real chance of keeping that shirt if they grasp their opportunity with both hands.”
Grays revealed the squad has been working on the way to combat Maguire’s absence since Tuesday.
One player who could earn a recall is Sam Hutchinson, who has not played since the draw with Millwall in August due to a back injury.
The midfield ace has been involved in full training due to the international break and is contention for a return against Watford.
Gray said: “People will say if you’re on a good run of form then you don’t want the international break but this one has been useful for us.
“It’s allowed us to get Sam Hutchinson back and given us a chance to get some proper rest into the lads who were carrying little knocks.
“I probably had 21 players out training on Thursday which is a big boost for us.”
Only long term injury victims Kamil Zayatte and Caolan Lavery are absent for the Owls as they prepare for the visit of Watford.
