Luton Town have been without a manager since the end of April when former West Brom assistant boss Graeme Jones left the club by mutual consent.

The increasing financial uncertainty hanging over the second tier club was cited as the reason behind the decision.

And reports in the national media suggest that his namesake and predecessor Nathan Jones will make a dramatic return to Kenilworth Road just over a year after he left for a torrid spell at Stoke City.

Jones looks likely to re-join the club he left in January 2019 with Luton second-bottom and six points from safety. He left for the bet365 Stadium a fan favourite and with the club second in League One after winning the League Two title.

Championship clubs returned to training and with a targeted return to action set for next month Jones will hope to hit the ground running.

Then under pressure after a catastrophic start to the season with Stoke, Jones attracted criticism from Wednesday fans after Stoke lost 1-0 at Hillsborough in October when he described the then-top-six Owls’ style of play as ‘very basic’.

Speaking after the match he said: “These are a very direct side who go from back to front, so it was a very basic game tonight.

“If you play your way and have a bit of cutting edge, you win the game, but we didn’t do the basics well enough first half. I’m flabbergasted really.”
