Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal has heaped praise on his side following their 5-0 pre-season victory over St Mirren.

Goals either side of half-time from from Atdhe Nuhiu (2), Vincent Sasso, Lewis McGugan and Marnick Vermijl ensured Wednesday ended their pre-season programme on a high note at Hillsborough today.

The Portuguese said: “I hope the fans enjoyed the game. I know the opponents were not so strong but they were organised. We played very well.

“We played attractive football. We didn’t lose the ball very easily. We moved the ball well from side to side, put in some good crosses and scored some good goals.

“We pressed well when we lost the ball and moved the ball quickly.

“We can do better when we win the ball and we will do.

“Our defensive organisation was good. We didn’t give St Mirren many chances.

“We prepared for it like a serious competition. We are ready to start the Championship.”

Skipper Glenn Loovens (ankle) was left-out as a precaution and should be available for selection when the Owls entertain Bristol City in their opening Championship match next week.
