Carlos Carvalhal says the introduction of Gary Hooper to his Sheffield Wednesday squad gives the head coach further opportunities to mix things up, tactically, in the forward line.
Carvalhal already has Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri and Lucas Joao to chose from, as his regular frontmen, and the Portuguese believes that the addition of Hooper can offer further scope for change when the need arises.
The key factor for the Owls boss is that all of his forwards offer something different and he says that this will become more important as the season goes on.
“We have a player who can play behind the lines in Fernando (Forestieri),” said Carvalhal.
“Hooper gives us more alternatives because he can also do that.
“He’s not a typical number 10 like Fernando. He can play with another striker.
“He is a moving striker so it is good for us that we have more alternatives. We have a lot of games so it is important we have players who can help win the games.
“It is the more important the team wins than who scores the goals.”
Carvalhal, who sends his team out to face Nottingham Forest today in their latest test, coming off the back of an unbeaten run that has now reached nine games, added that he will spend the next few weeks testing different formations, to fully utilise the firepower at his disposal.
“We have different solutions now,” he said. “We can play with Fernando behind the striker. Sometimes we can use three of them. We will test on other solutions in the international break. We will look at alternative solutions.
“In December, we have a lot of games so we need all the players fit and I hope we can recover them all because we have big games.”
While the arrival of Hooper brings a hope for Wednesdayites that the goal tally will rise significantly, Carvalhal isn’t pressuring his strikers.
“Who do the goals, I don’t care. Whether it’s the strikers or the centre halves, it is not important to me. For me, it’s more important that the players come to help the team, come to support their colleagues, do the teamwork and if the goals come, it will be the consequence of that dynamic,” he said.
