LEWIS Buxton today steps up his bid to win a new Hillsborough contract when he faces Wolves danger man Bakary Sako.

The Owls right-back will also be striving to atone for the penalty that he conceded in the FA Cup defeat at MK Dons.

Buxton has been a consistent performer this season and can boost his cause if he subdues left-winger Sako.

The defender was out injured when Sako scored the winner against Wednesday in September.

Buxton, whose contract ends this summer, said: “I would like to stay, definitely. I enjoy living here and playing here. It’s an honour to play at Hillsborough.

“I think we have a great set of fans, a big stadium and the club deserves to be in a better position than it is in.

“We have not had any contract talks yet; it is early days. I will just concentrate on playing the games and climbing the table and worry about that after.”

He also said: “I am one of the longest serving players now, along with Jermaine Johnson. I have enjoyed my time at Wednesday. Last season we were winning all the time and that was a good time for everyone, enjoyable.

“This year we started well, struggled, but now we have a bit of form and this is what we did all the hard work last season for.

“Hopefully, we can win the next few games and push into that block of teams and go on from there.”
