Sheffield Wednesday may give Lewis Buxton a try-out in a private game this week.
The right back was close to being fit last Saturday after his hamstring problem but was not quite ready for the match at Middlesbrough.
The Owls will not be taking any risks with him. He would play for only part of any match this week as part of a carefully planned return to fitness.
It is not yet known whether he will be fully ready for the next League game, against Yeovil a week on Saturday.
But the signing of Jordan Spence on loan for a month gives Dave Jones depth in the right-back spot, and the manager would have no qualms about continuing with the West Ham defender, who can also play at centre half.
Unlike Buxton, captain Anthony Gardner faces a long lay-off as there seems little doubt that he has torn his Achilles tendon, and he could have an operation when he sees a specialist this week.
Wednesday did not make further signings before Monday’s deadline because they were unable to make spaces by offloading players, but they will hope for progress in the emergency loan market next week.
