McGuinness’ Owls future has been a concern for many fans for a while now as the 22-year-old defender went from strength to strength in the Wednesday XI, with a transfer embargo in Cardiff meaning that the Championship strugglers are unable to bring in any new faces to try and help them survive.

Now, after The Star reported that the Bluebirds were indeed looking to bring McGuinness back to the Welsh capital, Wales Online have stated that the decision has been made to recall him.

Wednesday were desperate to not only keep the former Arsenal man at the club over the course of the 2022/23 campaign, but also want to get him to Hillsborough on a permanent basis if possible – however the latter always seemed a long shot and now the former feels tricky as well.

Darren Moore and his team will no doubt try and do their bit to persuade Cardiff to leave McGuinness where he is, and while there has been no confirmation from either club yet, it’s looking increasingly likely that things will be taken out of their hands.

Regardless of what happens with Wednesday’s November and December Player of the Month, Moore is out to bring in a defender to bolster his backline for the rest of the season – but if he does leave then one may not be deemed enough.

The Owls take on Newcastle United this weekend in the FA Cup, and with McGuinness already cup-tied it was always thought that he’d be sticking around until then anyway, and the Welsh reports suggest that he will only return to his parent club once that game has been put to bed.

McGuinness has only lost one League One game this season, and helped the Owls keep 11 clean sheets in the 17 matches that he’s featured in. If he does eventually leave, it would be a big blow to the club as they continue their push to win promotion.
