Sheffield Wednesday boss hopes to keep hold of Owls star

The 32-year-old, who has claimed 10 goals in 19 Championship starts this season, has entered the final six months of his Owls contract.

Asked if he would like to retain Fletcher's services, Monk told The Star: "Of course. That goes without saying."

Fletcher has been instrumental in Wednesday's improved run of results, hitting five goals in his last four outings.

"He has been fantastic," said Monk. "I know he had a good start to the season but since I have come in I have enjoyed working with him.

"He is doing exactly what is needed and scoring goals is the bonus that everyone wants on top for himself, the fans and everyone else.

"He is having a very good season and we just want him to maintain that."

The Owls boss said he has spoken to the players whose deals are set to expire at the end of the campaign. They include Fletcher, Cameron Dawson, Sam Hutchinson, Atdhe Nuhiu and Fernando Forestieri.

Monk said: "There are things we are going to have to look at moving forward but obviously I want to get the time to sit with the owner and people involved in that process.

"The owner will be back here very, very soon and we will sit and have those discussions.

"There are no worries on that side of it. Everything will be taken care of and you can see the players are focused and it is not at the forefront of their minds. They are trying to play their best football and give their all."

He has challenged his squad to show him why they deserve to be part of his long-term plans.

"Even if you have a contract or have five months left, your job is to prove yourself all the time," stressed Monk. "You have to prove your belong at that football club so that should be the attitude.

"What you are seeing is a lot of players trying to do that with their performances. It is pleasing to see and it is their job to continue playing well."
