Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk offers contract and injury update on in-form defender Morgan Fox

The news represents an impressive turnaround from the former Charlton man, who was loudly booed by a section of the Wednesday support ahead of their Hillsborough clash with Luton back in August.

With his current deal set to run out in the summer, many expected him to make a fresh start elsewhere.

But Fox is one of a handful of players who Monk hopes to keep at the club having questioned the character of several members of his squad after their 2-1 defeat at Wigan on Tuesday.

The Owls boss confirmed a new contract for Fox was a priority and said: “It was the same with Cameron [Dawson]. He’s the type we need. He’s got the fight, he’s got the desire to do well.

“He’s at that age and all those things, he’s got his future in front of him. The others will follow, hopefully we can get them done soon as well.”

Fox registered his first assist of the season at the DW Stadium with a pin-point cross onto the head of Jacob Murphy. Incredibly, only Murphy, Atdhe Nuhiu and Steven Fletcher have bettered his tally of three goals this campaign.

His Tuesday effort came at a cost, though, when he was substituted with an ankle knock early in the second half.

Monk said: “He typifies what you want to see. He picked up a knock early in the half, went through it and said at half-time he wanted to carry on.

“That’s what you want, you want that character and determination.

“I looked at him in that first five or 10 minutes and appreciated his effort and commitment but it [the injury] wasn’t right.

“I could see, he tried it. We can’t afford to lose a player like that with that type of attitude.

“It got progressively sorer and sorer as the game went on and you could see that he wasn’t able to put his full weight on through the first 10 minutes of the second half.”
