MARK Beevers believes that his signing of a new Sheffield Wednesday deal shows strength of character.

The defender knows full well that the competition for places will intensify as the Owls move up to the Championship and Dave Jones brings in new players.

But he told The Star that it would have been “weak” for him to look elsewhere instead of signing a new two-year deal and that by staying at Hillsborough it gives him a chance to move towards his peak at the club where he belongs.

The Barnsley-born-and-bred defender feels that at 22 he is still improving and the Owls have yet to see the best of him. “I definitely think so,” he said.

“You have to believe you can get better. You’re learning with every game you play; it’s onwards and upwards.

“We’re going up to another level; it’s a test. I’ve played there before.

“The manager is bringing some new faces in and we’ll see what we can do.”

The centre-half says he has not even thought about going out on loan again if he does not land a place in the Owls’ side - he went to MK Dons for four months last season, before Christmas.

“In pre-season everybody will be judged afresh,” he said. “The manager looks at what you do in pre-season games, and all that counts is the build-up towards the first game, at Derby.

“It’s nice to get the contract all sorted. I wanted to stay but you never know until it’s on the table. It’s good to put pen to paper.”

He says he was not worried or tempted to look elsewhere because the Owls have brought in Anthony Gardner and look like signing another centre-half.

“You can’t think like that,” he added. “The manager brings in players because he needs a few in every position, plus it keeps everyone on their toes. It’s good for the manager and good for the players. To move elsewhere because he’s signed a couple of players would be weak, I think. You have to stay strong and believe you can get that position.

“I’ve never signed fully for another club.

“I’m from Barnsley, only half an hour’s travel away, and this is a massive club - it’s perfect for me.”
