Aston Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo admits he expects Sheffield Wednesday to be among the leading contenders for promotion in the Championship this season.
Di Matteo watched his side suffer an opening day defeat to Wednesday after Fernando Forestieri’s late winner decided an entertaining and tight clash at Hillsborough.
“You can see Sheffield Wednesday have been together for a year,” the Italian said.
“They caused us some problems with their play and their rotation in midfield as well.
“Once we got into the game in the second half, we caused them problems. We created opportunities as well.
“You could see Sheffield Wednesday is a good team.”
Di Matteo admitted he was frustrated his side did not see the game out as they were hit by Forestieri’s late winner.
Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini mis-kicked under pressure from Gary Hooper, presenting Forestieri with a clear run on goal and he finished in fine style with just five minutes to go.
Di Matteo said: “It’s disappointing the way we conceded and also so late because once you get to ten minutes to go, away from home, against a team like Sheffield Wednesday, you would really like to see the game out and not really give them the opportunity to score.
“If they have to score I would like them to have to do something special rather than us giving the goal away.
“It is a shame that we gave it away rather than them earning it.”
