Well, it’s a bit of a mixed bag…

The last two seasons on the road have been good for the Owls as they beat both Cardiff City and Reading on the road, but it’s been in home fixtures that they’ve really managed to get off to a good start.

In fact, you have to go back to the 2004/05 promotion season out of League One to find the last time that they lost at home on the opening day, but on the road they’ve found things more difficult.

Wednesday have won three of their last seven opening fixtures whilst away from home, though those wins over Cardiff and the Royals as well as the 2014/15 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion have seen them turn the tide after a tough time on the road prior to them.

Darren Moore’s first few games in 2021/22 could very much help set the tone for the season following the club’s disappointing fall out of the Championship on the final day, however it isn’t an easy start as they take on his former club, Doncaster Rovers, as well as another relegated side, Rotherham United, inside the first couple of weeks. Then September gets underway with a tough game against promotion-chasing Sunderland.

An win on opening day doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but for Moore and the Owls, who have dealt with so much over the last few months, it would certainly be a welcome boost.
