Sheffield Wednesday to secure new backroom hire - not as direct replacement for departed man

Sheffield Wednesday will bring in a new member of backroom staff.

Sheffield Wednesday will bring in a new analyst to bolster Henrik Pedersen’s coaching staff - though it will not be as a direct replacement for exited set piece specialist Ben King.

The former Accrington Stanley figure was announced as a new hire at Bristol City last week having left Wednesday after over two years with the club. He worked closely on the analysis of set pieces alongside Andy Parslow in Danny Röhl’s Owls set-up. Following Parslow’s public departure amid crisis in October last year, Pete Shuttleworth took over responsibility for set pieces in a brutal campaign, with newly-installed coach Matt Hamshaw now having taken the reins.

Speaking on the plan for coaching set plays going forward, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star: “We knew that (King was leaving) before we appointed Matt Hamshaw.

“That was also a reason why he was the right profile, an experienced manager who had tried something himself, with promotions, he had been a manager, to be a strong culture man combined with a set-piece man. Because this is one of his biggest strengths, set-pieces. We thought it was a natural change when we could get a capacity like him.”

As reported in The Star some weeks ago, Pedersen confirmed that Wednesday were looking for a new analyst but confirmed the role would be broader than a set piece focus, saying: “He will not be directly replaced but we will have an analyst who will support with set-pieces but who also will do other things in the background for our opposition analysers and for our description of our game model. There are so many things to do so it will not be a one-for-one replacement.”

The status of Wednesday’s search is not yet known.
