Sheffield Wednesday 4 - 2 Plymouth Argyle: What Darren Moore had to say after impressive win

Sheffield Wednesday play host to Plymouth Argyle in what feels like a big game for Darren Moore’s Owls.

Saturday, 15th January 2022, 5:01 pm

It’s been a long while since Wednesday were in action at Hillsborough, and this afternoon’s encounter will be their first home game of 2022 as they look to try and get off to a winning start against a Plymouth side that have already beaten them 3-0 on two occasions this season.

Moore is hoping that a few faces will be back in the side after suspension and injury, with the likes of Massimo Luongo and Josh Windass apparently in contention for a starting berth once again – who will get the nod remains to be seen, but we’ll find out around 2pm.

Check out our blog for live updates as the afternoon goes on, we’ll have you covered as Wednesday look to get back to winning ways after a disappointing few weeks for the club.

  • Wednesday are back at Hillsborough for the first time in 2022
  • Plymouth have had the Owls’ number this season
  • Darren Moore is desperate to get winning again

Game over. Wednesday win.

It ends 4-2 to the Owls, and it’s massively deserved.

Not sure, really, where Plymouth’s goals came from, and Wednesday were excellent for large chunks of the match.

Mendez-Laing and Luongo were standout, as was Gregory, but an overall brilliant performance.

Three points off the Play-Offs now.

Bannan went off for Adeniran, and now Gregory has been replaced by Paterson.

That touch and finish...

He’s only been on the pitch a few minutes, but Josh Windass is back amongst the goals for Wednesday. A tremendous finish to bury it into the bottom right corner. Lovely stuff. 4-2.

Not long after Wednesday make it three, they’re only one up again. Jephcott.

Hutchinson gets the goal after an absolute peach of a ball in from Hunt. Rolling back the years. Tremendous stuff.

Windass comes on for Sow.

Top work on the edge of the box from the skipper, who set NML off down the left. He wins a corner.

More good work from Mendez-Laing, but Wednesday’s efforts are blocked.

The ball falls to FDB, who shoots wide.

Sow challenges the Plymouth backline and tries to put them under pressure before the ref gives a foul.

Plymouth having a spell

The visitors are having a decent spell of possession now as they push for an equaliser. BPF hasn’t had to save anything yet, but they’re trying to turn the screw.

Really good effort from Bannan, who tries to bend one into the top corner on his left foot after a nicely-worked free kick. It whistles just wide - very unlucky.
