What happened?

Posting on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, 29-year-old Winnall revealed that had tested himself for coronavirus ‘out of curiosity’, returning a positive reading.

The former Barnsley man, now into the final weeks of his current Owls contract, followed up the post some hours later clarifying the post.

“Thanks for all your concern, it really means a lot,” he said.

“I know I’m very lucky to be in a position where I can get tested through the football club, as I understand that the tests are at a premium.

“But thankfully I am ok and I will continue to spread the message – stay at home, help the NHS and save lives.

“That is the most important thing in these cruel, uncertain and devastating times.”

The Star understands that along with most professional clubs, Sheffield Wednesday have made testing kits available to all players and staff as part of their duty of care to employees.

Players and staff can request access if they report any symptoms of the coronavirus or if they feel the need to test themselves for peace of mind.

How are the rest of the squad?

It is understood that no other Wednesday players or staff have reported any symptoms of the coronavirus to the club.

The squad stopped training at their Middlewood Road base on March 20 and continue their bespoke training regimes at home, away from the rest of the squad.

Wednesday were understood to have taken all necessary precautions before Hillsborough and Middlewood Road were shut down late last month.

What happens now?

Well, not a lot. Winnall is understood to be taking the necessary precautions as outlined by the Government and continues in self-isolation at his home.

There are no indications that Winnall has experienced any further symptoms and it is unclear whether he will take any break in training.
