Sam Hutchinson on his Sheffield Wednesday contract, coming home and how things ended with Garry Monk

It’s almost exactly a year since Sam Hutchinson’s last game for Sheffield Wednesday – a 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup – and now he’s hoping to make up for lost time at Hillsborough.

The 31-year-old has played over 150 game in Wednesday colours over the years, but was announced as a ‘new’ signing on Monday following the decision to bring him back to Sheffield to help in the club’s relegation battle this season.

‘Hutch’ was visibly delighted when talking about his return to S6, and says that as soon as he heard about their interest, there was only one place he wanted to be.

Speaking to The Star he said, “I told my agent that there was only really one club that I wanted to go to. Obviously we looked into other clubs because, as an agent, he’s trying to find out what’s best for me. There were other options, I’m not going to lie, financially there were better options, but I only had one club I wanted to come to. I still feel like I have a point to prove here.”

He also said, ““You know it means something to people, I was walking around Sheffield to the hotel yesterday, and you get a little wave and stuff like that. It means something to people, and that’s important for me. It’s not just about the money.”

“It feels like home. I’m from down south, and I’m very much a southern boy, but being up in Sheffield I’m happy. I feel like I’m home…”

The midfielder also confirmed that his Owls contract includes an incentive where he’ll get another year if he plays a certain amount of games, and he admits that he’s itching to get back out on the field again – as soon as possible.

“I’m hoping to get in the action straight away,” he said. “So we’ll see what happens… I’d love to be put straight into the squad, but that’s not my decision. I just do what I’m told, with a smile on my face…

Meanwhile, when asked about his exit last year and the way that he left the club under Garry Monk, the midfielder seemed at ease with the situation, saying, “I don’t think it really fell apart… He had a decision to make and he didn’t want me to play anymore. We were doing well at the time, and that was it really.”

And that’s now behind him, so it’s up to Neil Thompson – a man he knows well – to make the call on whether he’ll get thrown straight back into the fight against Coventry City tomorrow night.

You would think that, given the injury and COVID-19 concerns, SWFC’s new number six will at least be part of the travelling party to Birmingham when they depart, and he’ll be desperate to get back out on the pitch and show the fans what they’ve been missing over the last year.

And his position? “To be honest, we’ve had a chat, and Thommo’s said sometimes you might have to fill in everywhere. Because he knows I can play different positions. I’ve said ‘Not a problem’. As long as I can help the team out, I’ll try and do anything I can.”
