Revealed! The potential transfer window deadline for Sheffield Wednesday to sign players after EFL ruling
The summer transfer market lasts for 12 weeks
Clubs in England are set to find out the dates of the summer transfer window, including when it closes, following news from Scotland where a Uefa ruling revealed an end date of 5 October for transfers.
The transfer market in England has been impacted significantly by the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent resumption of the Premier League and Championship seasons which are not set to finish until the end of this month.
It has put clubs in a difficult position when it comes to player trading.
Not only is there budgetary uncertainty, especially with the prospect of behind closed door matches, but there is also the difficulty of planning a squad when the season is still being played out. There is then the knock-on effect for clubs in League One and League Two whose recruitment is shaped to an extent by those clubs in the top two tiers.
However, in Scotland there has been a strong indication of how the transfer window will operate.
The SFA announced this morning that the window is now officially open for Scottish clubs and it will run until midnight on Monday, 5 October.
In the statement it was revealed "the recommendation from the European Leagues and Uefa that European associations close their transfer windows on 5 October”. The SFA believe their announcement will align with other leagues and associations.
Fifa have confirmed the summer transfer window cannot exceed 12 weeks.
In England, the window has yet to open but there have been suggestions the Premier League would look to follow Uefa's guidance and close the window on Monday, 5 October, two weeks prior to the start of the Champions League.
The top-flight is expected to start on 12 September, while the EFL aren’t set to make a decision until later this month with two possible options – 29 August and 12 September.
Due to the resumption of the Premier League and Championship campaigns, there could be a request made to extend the transfer window in England until 19 October, the eve of the start of the Champions League.
