Sky Sports are reporting that the Owls captain was the subject of a permanent transfer bid from promotion hopefuls Brentford, but that the offer has been quickly dismissed.

Bannan is in the final year of his contract with the club he has been at since a move from Crystal Palace in 2015. He has made 214 appearances and taking over the captaincy from Tom Lees this year, commented on the ‘special bond’ he has with the club and its supporters.

Owls boss Garry Monk has repeatedly made clear Bannan’s importance to the side. In a largely misfiring side and despite injury struggles he was among the Championship players with the highest creative output last season.

Earlier this year the 30-year-old felt the need to clarify comments he made to the media in Scotland about Brentford’s style of play, making clear he has ‘loved every minute’ at Hillsborough and later saying he could see himself ending his career with the club.

Asked about his career in that interview with the Daily Record, Bannan said: “I’ve got no regrets but if I’d have found a club that maybe suited my style more, I’d have achieved more.

“It sounds selfish but maybe if a team was built around the way I play, it would have brought the best out in me.”

He added: “Look at Brentford now in the Championship. It would be perfect for me to play in a team like that.”
