The 29-year-old, who is Wednesday club record signing, has found himself in and out of Garry Monk’s plans this season, delivering all three of his goals this season in one red-hot half in December’s 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

But Garry Monk has been clear in his intention to freshen up his forward options and Rhodes has been the only one linked with a move away – he was the subject of a derisory loan bid from Wigan Athletic earlier in the window.

Reports have linked a potential Owls move for creative midfielder Josh Windass – son of former Wednesday loanee Dean – an interest that could make weight in any potential deal the other way.

But Cardiff City, who have wrestled both Wednesday and Bristol City for position in the race to sign Crystal Palace forward Connor Wickham throughout the window, appear to have reaffirmed their potential interest in Rhodes.

Reports in the south Wales media suggest Bluebirds boss Neil Harris will launch an 11th-hour bid having accepted Wickham’s likely destination is Wednesday. They had been linked with a move earlier in the window, but had reportedly outlined Wickham as their priority.

Rhodes, who is out of contract with Wednesday at the end of the 2021/22 season, spent last season out on loan at Norwich City.

He came off the bench in the Owls’ lacklustre 2-1 defeat at relegation-threatened Wigan on Tuesday.
