Reports: Eight Championship clubs could face points deduction as coronavirus confuses FFP rules

Confusion as to how football authorities plan to adapt to the ongoing coronavirus crisis continues, with question marks over how the rules of Financial Fair Play are changed to accommodate for the loss of revenue across the league.

And a report in the national media claims that as it stands ‘between five and eight’ Championship clubs could face a points deduction next season as the football landscape continues to shift with every passing day.

The current reporting period for the Championship’s FFP Profit and Sustainability rules is due to end on June 30. By then clubs will have to show losses of less than £39m over the past three years.

But some clubs were expecting windfalls in terms of revenue, prize money and transfer fees, it is reported, and may well fall short.

It is not known whether Sheffield Wednesday are one of the clubs in question. The Owls are still fighting against a charge of misconduct centring on the sale of Hillsborough to a company owned by chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Wednesday are one of four clubs not to have presented their accounts for last season after the deadline was extended to the end of July.

Last month football finance expert Keiran Maguire suggested that finance rules were likely to be relaxed in a ‘common sense’ approach to the situation.

One Championship club chief, who chose not to be named, said: “There is a feeling there are some who have overspent and are now looking to wriggle out of P&S.

“If they have broken the rules, they should be punished.”
