The 47-year-old saw his odds slashed from 25/1 on Wednesday morning to just 6/1 later in the afternoon.

A number of other figures, including Joey Barton, Paul Cook, caretaker boss Neil Thompson, and the newly-available Mick McCarthy are also being touted as potential replacements for the recently-sacked Tony Pulis. The Welshman lasted just 45 days at Hillsborough before being dismissed.

The sudden shortening of Weiler’s odds is likely to raise a few eyebrows, however, especially following comments from owner Dejphon Chansiri made last week in which he suggested he and his associates were in the process of compiling a shortlist of candidates.

Weiler has been out of work since leaving Egyptian outfit Al Ahly in October. The ex-defender won the Egyptian Premier League and Super Cup before vacating the post, and has also spent time in the dugout with Anderlecht in Belgium, FC Luzern in his home country, and FC Nurnberg in Germany.

The one-time Switzerland international won a Belgian league title and a Belgian Super Cup during his time with the former.

Over the course of his managerial career, Weiler has accrued a points-per-game average of 1.75, as well as a win percentage rate of 52%. In his last role he won over 77% of his matches with Al Ahly.

According to Transfermarkt, the boss prefers to set his sides out with a lone striker, supporting the focal point of his attack with a packed midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
