The remarkable goal record that highlights the super-sub status of Sheffield Wednesday forward Atdhe Nuhiu

The six-foot-five Kosovan, hauled on to replace the hard-working Sam Winnall with 21 minutes remaining, created havoc in the Leeds backline, crashing about and delivering touches of quality to send travelling Owls supporters into raptures.

His goal, scored in the fourth minute of injury time, sealed the points after his exquisite 87th-minute assist for Jacob Murphy. And it’s something that has been far from unusual this season, with all four marks of his goal tally coming after 90 minutes.

In fact, late Nuhiu contributions have provided three Championship points and a home cup tie against Premier League opposition so far this campaign. Without them – and of course this is a long way from an exact science – Wednesday would be 10th.

The first, in a Carabao Cup war of attrition at Rotherham United, saw him poke home six minutes after normal time and set up that home tie with Everton.

A 93rd-minute equaliser followed in similar circumstances in the clash with Fulham in September, earning a point on a day that Wednesday were second-best. A match-sealing header in the 94th minute at Charlton was less vital, but sealed the deal.

And then there was Leeds.

“He was brilliant,” said Wednesday boss Garry Monk after the Elland Road smash-and-grab. “It was a brilliant, unbelievable finish.

“That’s what you need to do when you’re a sub and you come on, you have to have an effect and to contribute to the game.

“But it’s unfair for me to single out any player today.

“That was a proper team performance and that’s the most important thing for me.”

Nuhiu is 30 and is the club’s third-longest-serving player after Kieran Lee and Liam Palmer. He’s out of contract in the summer, but Brighton aside he has featured in every match taken by Garry Monk this season.

His future at the club is yet to be revealed.
