But the scoreline proved to be a long way down the list of burning talking points on an interesting night in Humberside.

Let’s take a look at just five..

KoREDe suffers on Owls debut

The good news? The paperwork woes circling over Wednesday new boy Korede Adedoyin appear to have been lifted as the former Everton youngster started the game, making his Owls debut alongside Charles Hagan up top.

The bad? Well, he didn’t quite finish the game.

Adedoyin was sent off for a high foot in the latter stages of the clash as he challenged the Tigers’ Jacob Greaves.

Trialists aplenty.. but who?

Not one.. but two, according to the Owls side listed by Hull City.

Former Liverpool and Burnley youngster Marley Blair played his second match for the club after impressing in the 1-0 defeat to Barnsley last week, playing through 76 minutes.

But a new name included in the Wednesday side was that of 21-year-old Giovanni McGregor, a central midfielder most recently contracted to Crystal Palace.

McGregor, who made the move across London to join from Brentford in 2017, was a key member of the Eagles’ youth sides for several seasons before spending the latter part of last season at National League South side Dartford.

Penney a surprise inclusion

There was an under-23 return for midfield man Liam Waldock, who made his first team debut in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat at Fulham, but far more eyebrow-raising was the inclusion of Matt Penney, who played all 90 minutes.

Penney has been a firm member of the senior squad this season and is battling the likes of Kadeem Harris, Liam Palmer and Moses Odubajo for minutes on the Wednesday flanks. The 22-year-old was left out of the squad at Bristol City altogether on Sunday, though he travelled and trained with the squad’s substitutes.

Asked why he had left him out, first team boss Garry Monk said on the desire to create competition:” Matt’s doing well, and we’re talking about small percentages here, but it’s about performing consistently and reaching the levels that we need.

“It’s a step back for Matt, but he’ll come back and keep fighting like all of them.”

Osaze edges closer

Another game, another outing for returning defender Osaze Urhoghide.

The youngster is on the comeback trail after suffering a knee injury during the summer and having played 45 minutes against Barnsley upped his output with 71 minutes at the KCOM before he was replaced by Lewis Farmer.

Asked about Urhoghide’s progress last week, Monk suggested an outing of 70 minutes or so was net on his to-do list, with a full match to follow.

“When lads are out for over a four week period, even though they do a lot of training and rehabilitation, you need to get those minutes in. It’s about the final tick boxes. He’s done great, and we’ll keep assessing him as we go along.”

Another defeat

Three matches, three defeats by only one goal. A worry? Not quite.

Lee Bullen’s men have been gutted by first-team involvement of a huge number of players. Expect them to pick up wins as they’re strengthened in the Carabao-less coming weeks.
