Intriguing hint dropped at future prospect of Jamie Vardy's Sheffield Wednesday return

Jamie Vardy to Sheffield Wednesday was the rumour that wouldn’t go away this summer.

The celebrity wife of former England footballer Jamie Vardy has chosen not to extinguish any prospect of him signing for Sheffield Wednesday when asked the question in a question and answer session on social media.

The Star reported last month that Wednesday had put a ‘creative proposal’ to the EFL for consideration that would have allowed them to make a contract offer to the boyhood Owl in spite of their agreed recruitment restrictions. The proposal was rejected at board level and Vardy went on to sign for Championship club Burnley.

It’s believed that some level of discussions were had between Wednesday and camp Vardy over a move and though it is not thought that the prospect was rejected out of hand by the player, it is not exactly clear how likely or otherwise the potential deal ever was. The veteran forward, 39, signed a one-year deal at Turf Moor having been a sought-after free agent following his departure from Italian outfit Cremonese.

Posting on Instagram in response to a fan query that asked ‘Would you ever see Jamie play for SWFC?’, former I’m A Celeb star Rebakah replied: ‘What I will say is you have an incredible owner whose moving mountains to make your club great again! Trust the process.’ The message signed off with a smiley face emoji.

Vardy, who makes no secret of his boyhood adulation for Wednesday, was released by the club as a teenager before staging a historic rise through the leagues from Stocksbridge Park Steels to the World Cup. Speaking on his own podcast last week, he proudly recalled winding Sheffield United supporters up when scoring against them in the colours of Leicester City.

“Right, here we f***ing go,” he grinned. “Bramall Lane, I'm a Sheffield lad, support obviously Sheffield Wednesday. I knew I was going to get abused all day, but that's the bit I enjoy.

“So when it comes and I score in front of their main Kop, all their fans, I'm like right, here we f***ing go. I only had to go (points to his back). I saw people running down to try and get to the front. Perfect. My idea of a great day, getting the abuse outside. I could hear them.”
