'Quick wins' - new Sheffield Wednesday boss gives his verdict on squad he has inherited

Your latest Owls news...

Dave Challinor has stated the importance of getting some of their ‘better players’ back from injury, but has identified some ‘quick wins’ to help them improve in the meantime.

The new Sheffield Wednesday manager will be in the dugout for the first time this Sunday for the FA Cup first round trip to Oldham Athletic. He took his first training session on Tuesday and then spoke to the media in the afternoon.

The Owls have had a lengthy injury list in the first part of the season, with fresh problems for Reece James, Billy Mitchell and Ali Al-Hamadi in recent days. In particular, Wednesday will be keen to get experienced defensive pair Di’Shon Bernard and Liam Cooper back in action. Louie Barry, who Challinor worked with at Stockport County, is expected to be back after the next international break later this month after three months out.

On the squad he has inherited, Challinor said: “The squad's an amazing squad. We're feeling a little bit of pain at the moment with some injuries, but this is a real a new group, 18 new players in the summer. You go through processes of how that works and how things come together quickly. You throw in the adversity of not being able to name the same team consecutively because of injuries and suspensions.”

In the meantime, Challinor has identified some ‘quick wins’ that they can solve initially to help improve performances and hopefully pick up some positive results.

He added: “We know we need our best players back, and that will hopefully not be be too far away. But the squad's full of talent. Like I say, there are some quick wins, just in terms of a little bit structurally that we can hopefully work upon. But really, really positive with what we've got in the in the building, and think we can have a real a real push in terms of getting a run together, building some momentum, and putting the building blocks in place that will help us further down the line.”
