Moore replaces Tony Pulis in the Hillsborough hotseat following his sacking at Christmas.

The 46-year-old former central defender, who starred for a number clubs in a playing career spanning more than 650 games, is tasked with keeping second-bottom Owls in the Championship after a miserable campaign which currently sees them six points adrift of safety.

His first game in charge will be the huge six-pointer against relegation rivals Rotherham United at Hillsborough on Wednesday.

Moore is Wednesday’s third permanent manager this season following Pulis and Garry Monk’s sackings earlier this season.

Our Owls correspondent Joe Crann says: “Really genuinely excited about Darren Moore’s appointment. Seems like the sort of appointment the club has been screaming out for.

“Have heard great things about him as a person, to. I’m in agreement with the others on here saying that Darren Moore needs time.

"I hope this isn’t an end of the season appointment only. If Wednesday go down, it’s not Darren Moore’s fault.

“He needs time to get the club back on track, even if it’s in League One.”

But what are Wednedayites saying about the appointment?

Let’s have a look at what they’re saying on Twitter.

@sweds1867 Quality appointment - finally some optimism.

@Jinja_Owl Good luck Darren. Good appointment. Now let him ‘MANAGE’ not just do as he’s told by the ownership whose previous methods have failed badly.

@Owlizee Ticks a few boxes does this. His stock is rising and it’s a huge challenge for him. One to keep should we go down. He knows League One well and can mastermind a return to the Championship, should the worse happen. Nobody can know for sure but I like this appointment on paper. UTO.

@AlexAkersSWFC You’ve got a big task on your hands Dazza, but let's get it!! Keep us up, you’re a hero.

@bowler1867 At last, a positive step. Now give him everything he needs to keep us up and try sorting out the rest of the club while he’s going about it.

@Jordrl66 I don’t mind it to be honest. Done great at Doncaster. Give the guy time and a chance to build, Chansiri. Also if worst was to happen, he knows League One.

@kylepem17 Happy with this. Anybody thinking we can get someone better has ridiculous expectations!! Great appointment, regardless what happens this year!!

@scottwilkes88 Sensible appointment for #swfc He shouldn’t be judged on this farce of a season. Needs time to rebuild the squad in the summer to get us out of League One as quick as possible.

@bradask28 Think Moore is a really good appointment, we can’t judge him on the next 14 games. He deserves the summer to make a stamp on the team.

@HatScarfShirt Unexpected, and I’m not 100 per cent it’s the right decision on his part, but clearly a top manager who was doing well at West Brom and he can bring some steel back to the whole thing. Welcome Darren!

@MWThrussellCracking appointment - although it does also smack of the realisation that relegation is a possible has sunk in now. Welcome to the Owls Mr Moore!
