Ex-Premier League chairman tells Dejphon Chansiri to sell Sheffield Wednesday 'at the earliest opportunity'
A respected former Premier League chairman has expressed his concern over the ongoing malaise at Sheffield Wednesday - and has implored Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club as soon as possible.
The Owls have been mired by financial problems for much of the year, with the club currently under embargo for six different breaches of EFL regulations and awaiting news of a likely points deduction to put further strain on their uphill relegation scrap. Players remain unpaid for their work in September and other employees are waiting on the fulfilment of their monthly payments.
Speaking to The Sports Agents podcast, former Bournemouth chairman Jeff Mostyn spoke about the need for the incoming Independent Football Regulator to prove effective in protecting against the sort of situation Wednesday find themselves in. Mostyn spearheaded the early years of the Cherries’ march through the EFL into the top tier and stayed on as an influential chairman until 2023.
“There should be some form of regulation to spot somebody effectively killing a football club with over 100 years history,” he said. “The players, the staff, the whole community would be ruined for what reason? I do not understand. The value of that football club is lowering every single day, so what is the final gain?”
Despite assurances earlier this summer that Chansiri was open to selling the club, approaches over the last months have proven unsuccessful with sources close to potential deals suggesting a frustration with both the sales process and asking price. Mostyn made comment on the dire need for Wednesday to move on - and for the Thai to seize control of the football club.
“I know what the right and honourable thing to do is,” he said. “I know the owner of Sheffield Wednesday, who I’ve never met so it’s probably wrong for me to say, I believe if everything I read is true then that sale should be made at the earliest possibility to save a football club with one of the greatest histories in English football.
“It’s for the players, the staff and the whole town, everybody associated with that football club. I hope we find an owner that is honourable and treats Sheffield Wednesday with the respect it deserves.”
