The announcement came after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that no sporting events will take place until at least September.

Speaking while unveiling France's plans to exit confinement, Philippe confirmed that all sport must remain prohibited in the coming months.

“Big sporting events will not be able to take place before September," Philippe said. "The 2019-20 season, notably for football, will not be able to resume.”

Eyes now turn to how the season is concluded by authorities. It has been reported that senior figures at governing body LFP are considering three options: taking the table at the halfway point, after 27 rounds or as it stands now.

Though perhaps the most radical the first – seen as fair by some in that it is the only point of the campaign that offered a near-level playing field – is understood to be gathering support.

In the top tier at least it would see no change to the money-spinning Champions League places, with PSG taking the title from Marseille and Rennes third. The relegation spots would also feature the same teams; Nimes, Amiens and Toulouse.

If transferred to the English leagues the conclusion would cause significantly more disruption to the current tables, with Sheffield Wednesday rising 12 places in the Championship table to their third place at halfway.

Last week the EFL reiterated their desire to finish the season organically.
