Popular Sheffield Wednesday defender ruled out of Doncaster Rovers clash - but better news than expected
Owls injury round-up...
Di’Shon Bernard will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s trip to Doncaster Rovers this Saturday but is expected to return to training next week.
The popular defender hobbled off in the first-half of Tuesday night’s defeat to Notts County with a knee injury. Thankfully, it was not the same knee that sidelined him for 19 months. There were fears it could be a bad one as he trudged off at Meadow Lane but the news sounds better than expected.
Henrik Pedersen, who said the injury was not a result of his workload, explained: “We hope and believe that he can train next week again. I cannot explain exactly what it is, but it was positive. So we expect him to be a part of the training next week. There was concern in the whole squad. It was a sad moment and that's why we are very happy that that there was nothing bad.”
Meanwhile, Liam Cooper is to be assessed. The defender, who has been a standout player for The Owls this season, is being managed through games. Wednesday were able to take the 35-year-old off when cruising to a handsome victory against AFC Wimbledon a week ago but the injury to Bernard meant that Cooper remained on the pitch as they tried to battle back. It would not be a surprise if the centre-back was ruled out of a third match in a week.
“Let's see tomorrow with him,” Pedersen said on Friday afternoon. “He has been strong for us, and yeah, we take it step by step with Liam. But he has been very strong, very strong.”
Regarding the other injuries, Joe Lumley is not training yet, Sil Swinkels has trained all week, Ricardo Santos is unavailable, Jordi Liongola is doing some training, Louie Barry is expected to return after the international break, while George Brown has trained but is not ready yet.
