A manager often placed among the favourites for the Sheffield Wednesday manager’s job is back on the market after leaving a left-field European post.

Mick McCarthy, who has been a popular choice among some sections of the Owls support when linked with the role, was sacked by Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia after just two months in charge, having lost his last four matches.

The former Republic of Ireland manager, born in South Yorkshire, reportedly had a contract that ran until 2022.

He leaves behind former Owls cult hero Atdhe Nuhiu, who signed for the Europa League hopefuls shortly before McCarthy after leaving Wednesday earlier this year.

The Hillsborough club are on the hunt for their third manager of the season after the shock sacking of Tony Pulis last month. Caretaker boss Neil Thompson has overseen two wins in his two matches at the helm and the club are understood to be undertaking a diligent recruitment process.

It remains to be seen what direction Wednesday go in and whether consideration would be made for McCarthy, who could be seen to be an appointment of the same school of the likes of Pulis.

Within minutes of his Cypriot sacking, McCarthy slid into the midst of the betting market for the next Wednesday manager, his early 14/1 price taking him in ahead of the likes of Thorsten Fink and Nigel Pearson in the betting.

He started out with Millwall and also managed the likes of Sunderland, Ipswich and Wolves either side of two spells with Ireland.
