Peterborough United man makes big Sheffield Wednesday prediction after 'basketball' clash
Sheffield Wednesday won-out a battling away win at Peterborough United on Saturday.
A back-and-forth battle at London Road saw Sheffield Wednesday rise to the top of League One - but a tight clash didn’t stop Peterborough United boss Luke Williams from making a major Owls prediction.
A winner from Yan Valery earned Wednesday three points as the away side valiantly fought through to take their fourth win in five, falling behind the hosts on just about every attacking metric including xG (0.92 to Peterborough’s 2.27). Speaking after the game, a disappointed Williams reflected on a positive performance from his side - and predicted that the Owls would go on to be one of the best sides in the division.
“I was happy with the performance, but devastated by the result,” WIlliams said. “We didn’t look like a lesser team than Sheffield Wednesday and they are top. I imagine they will be one of the top five in the division, but we created a lot of chances today, certainly more than our opponent.
“We controlled more of the ball and limited them to fewer chances. There was a lot of things I was happy about, but then a lapse of concentration led to the first goal and then a routine corner kick - where everyone is in position - leads to the second goal.”
Williams, who The Star understands to have been the back-up managerial candidate at Hillsborough when Danny Röhl was appointed boss, described the second half of the match as a ‘basketball game’ such was its blow-for-blow nature and was left scratching his head at aspects of his team’s inability to transfer performance into a result.
“It’s a shame,” he said. “I think we played a good first half and it looked like we did everything we can to win the game. But we made a basic error and that’s a shame because it ruined a good 45-minute performance... We started really bright, we scored, but we conceded from a corner that is avoidable. It wasn’t the cutest corner that catches you out.
“I don’t think any team is going to play Sheffield Wednesday and have all the ball and they don’t pose any threat. They’re always going to pose some threat but we certainly created the bigger chances and more of them. We feel a little bit hard done by to not get anything out of the game.”
