Skipper Glenn Loovens has warned his teammates that two former Sheffield Wednesday stars will be determined to dent their promotion hopes at Rotherham United tonight.

Defender Lewis Buxton and forward Chris Maguire are poised to face the Owls for the first time since departing Hillsborough last summer. Joe Mattock, another former Wednesday player, is unlikely to be risked, having only just recovered from a shoulder problem.

Loovens said he has not spoken recently to the trio but told The Star: “I’m sure they will be delighted to play against us and want to prove that we were foolish to let them go.

“But that’s football and it will be good to meet up with them again.”

The Owls go into the South Yorkshire derby looking to maintain their impressive form. Carlos Carvalhal’s men are unbeaten in their last seven outings, a run which has moved them into the Championship’s top 10.

Loovens, who is set to keep his place in the side with Michael Turner ruled out due to a knee injury, reckons Wednesday possess the quality to challenge for a top-six spot.

He said: “I’ve been here for three seasons now and this is the strongest squad I’ve been involved in here. We have got quality players in every position and we have 25 players who can easily play in the first eleven. You need that competition if you are going to be successful. Touch wood we can steer clear of injuries and if that happens I think we can have a really good go at it.”
