FORMER Barnsley player and Leeds academy manager Neil Thompson was today named as the Owls’ new coach, writes Paul Thompson.

Gary Megson had earlier confirmed the appointment of Chris Evans, formerly his No 2 at Bolton, as Hillsborough assistant manager.

Thompson, aged 47, left Leeds last October.

A defender as a player, he was born in Beverley, Yorkshire, and began his career at Nottingham Forest.

He played for Hull, Scarborough, Ipswich and Barnsley, before becoming player-manager at York, Scarborough and Boston United.

Evans, 48, was academy manager at Wolves for almost 20 years before joining Megson at Bolton.

A Welshman, he was a trainee at Arsenal, had a spell at Stoke and played for York and Darlington.
