The day after I had praised Oguchi Onyewu and Glenn Loovens in this column, they produced their worst displays in Wednesday shirts, along with Lewis Buxton, as part of an odd sort of 4-1 defeat to Watford, writes Steve Walmsley.
From being a side who hadn’t looked much like conceding goals at all, we managed to ship four from the half dozen attempts Watford had.
We did look a bit leggy overall, possibly one too many games in March for a few of the players, but we still had more of the ball and had opportunities to get the ball into the box, but we just didn’t do it often enough or with the quality needed.
Watford caught us on the break and we defended badly to give away four poor goals.
If we are not at the top of our game, we can struggle. Let’s hope a few days without a game have refreshed minds and bodies for a very difficult trip to Leicester - we will need to be as fresh as daisies!
With 13 players out of contract this summer, we are now starting talks with some. For what it’s worth my view is definitely try to keep Chris Kirkland, Jose Semedo, Loovens and Onyewu; let JJ, David Prutton, David Prutton, Martin Taylor, Miguel Llera and Rafa Floro move on to pastures new, with our gratitude for their efforts, particularly JJ, Prutts and Llera.
I am torn on Reda - fantastic spirit but is he good enough for the Championship and fit enough?
I am torn on Anthony Gardner too - he is good enough, but maybe a one-year contract at the most to check on fitness?
I haven’t seen anything of Adam Davies in goal to judge either way.
There certainly is a chance to bring in new blood this summer and we should take it.
