A month ago we were in the bottom three and we were six points adrift, now we are out of the bottom three after three wins, two draws and two defeats under Stuart Gray and Lee Bullen - no one can deny that they have had an impact, both on results, togetherness and team shape.
If that kind of form was to persist until May we will be in no danger of relegation this season. The squad still has it’s problems of course; if you were to take out Glenn Loovens and Connor Wickham we would look much weaker as a team so it was with much relief that we heard of Wickham staying till January and Loovens till May.
But I think Gray/Bully have done enough to justify getting the gig until the end of the season.
I acknowledge that it might not be a long term solution but in the context of who is available and who would come, and who would meet the wishes of MM and the fans (the shortlist isn’t long), I would stick with them.
I think Bully has had a positive impact on team morale and togetherness - evidence the goal celebrations in the excellent win against Blackpool, every single outfield player joined in, in a way that was reminiscent of the team spirit built by Gary Megson in the promotion season - so I think it is important that both he and Gray have a role in the immediate future.
My one concern would be player recruitment.
I wonder whether bringing in a Director of Football type person to assist them until May might be a good idea? Anyway it’s great to start the new year looking in better shape and here’s to a more positive 2014 down at S6.
