SHEFFIELD Wednesday are closing in on Nottingham Forest left-back Julian Bennett.
Manager Gary Megson hopes that the signing can be clinched within the next 24 hours.
“That’s a possibility; it’s quite a way down the road. Fingers crossed, that should get done very soon,” said Megson.
The 26-year-old defender would be the Owls’ third signing of the summer and would be moving in on a free.
He is so well regarded by Forest that if he did not get a suitable move this summer, they were prepared to give him a further year and let him go out on loan to boost his career if did not get back in their team.
Megson took him from Walsall to Forest in 2006.
He was Forest’s Player of the Year in the season they won promotion to the Championship, 2007-08, and was named in the PFA League One Team of the Season.
Wednesday are also still working on a deal for Leicester winger Lloyd Dyer, with chairman Milan Mandaric exploiting his contacts at the Walkers stadium.
“He [Dyer] is a great lad with a great attitude,” said Megson. “If there is an opportunity [to sign him], I’d like to do that.”
Megson and Mandaric met yesterday to discuss players - “recognising that there’s now some urgency to get some players in,” said the manager.
“I could get 20 in now if I wanted, but they might not be the right ones. It’s vitally imporant we got the right ones in and hold our nerve a bit.”
He revealed that talks are still going on with Preston about Neil Mellor. He also confirmed that there is interest from Charlton in Michael Morrison: “There has been something going but nothing concrete as yet.”
