From Ricky George’s thunderbolt for Hereford United against Newcastle United in 1972 to Wrexham’s shock win over George Graham’s Arsenal in 1992, the FA Cup third round has a wonderful habit of producing a shock or two . . . and, of course, some beautiful memories.

So, with another third round weekend upon us, we thought we’d ask Wednesday fans for their favourite FA Cup games from yesteryear.

Let’s take a look at what some of you have had to say on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Five-match marathon against eventual winners Arsenal in 1979

Simon Brunt on Twitter wrote: “Clearing the pitch of snow with my late dad so the third round game v Arsenal could be played in January 1979. Then watching the games at Hillsborough, Highbury and three at Filbert Street as we eventually lost in the fourth replay as a team in the old Third Division. Proper cup tie.”

Steel City semi-final win at Wembley in 1993

Andrew Burkinshaw on Facebook: “Arsenal games in ‘79, Burnley quarters 5-0 in ‘83 but has to be the S6 v S2 semi in ‘93. It was always my dream to see the blue and red of Sheffield to play in the FA Cup final, shame the two games that proceeded it didn’t bear fruit.”

1993 FA Cup final against Arsenal

Bert Hall on Facebook: “Abide with Me at the 3pm in the 1993 final. Always watched the FA Cup final as a kid and I never thought I’d get the chance to be there as a Wednesdayite.”

1983 FA Cup semi-final against Brighton at Highbury

Paul Middleton tweeted: “For me, it will always be my first FA Cup semi final at Highbury against Brighton, April 1983. Unbelievable day, and awesome atmosphere. Pity we lost, but the team of the 80s and 90s were by far the best I’ve seen, and we had a closeness to the club and players we don’t have now.”

5-0 quarter-final replay win over Burnley at Hillsborough in 1983

@whollygrayl on Twitter wrote: “Beating Burnley 5-0 after a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor. I lived in Burnley at the time and travelled to Hillsborough with three Burnley fans. They were in the lower West Stand and I was above them in the upper. They decided to go at four and we heard the fifth go in on the radio.”

FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea at Villa Park in 1966
