Goals either side of half-time from Morgan Fox and Sam Winnall ensured Wednesday progressed to the fifth round of the world’s oldest cup competition.

Nahki Wells grabbed a late consolation after a mistake from Cameron Dawson but Wednesday, cheered on by around 3,000 fans, held on to return to winning ways.

Monk was delighted his players made amends after their embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

“We knew with 3,000 coming to London that we had to restore pride and put in a performance that restored a little bit of relief,” Monk told The Star.

“It was a win for the fans and the club as a whole – 100 per cent.

“We took a big hit to our pride last week.

“We let ourselves down badly in front of our fans at Hillsborough.

“There were some words that we all had and you expect a response. But words are words and actions are actions.

“It was pleasing to see the action of the players.

“I think that performance goes a little way to making amends for last week and now the challenge is to continue that into the league game on Tuesday.”

Monk confirmed he rested midfield playmaker Barry Bannan, with one eye on Tuesday’s league meeting with relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic.
