Rotherham United drew 0-0 with Luton Town on Tuesday night in their game in hand meaning that it’s a three-way fight between the Millers, the Owls and Derby to avoid the rop into the third tier on Saturday.

Wednesday take on the Rams at Pride Park and have to win and hope that Rotherham lose to Cardiff City.

Some hope for Owls fans who have been dismayed by some performances of late and many of them can’t quite believe they still haven’t been relegated.

That said, there wasn’t a great deal of optimism flying around even after Rotherham’s blank at Kenilworth Road and social media was awash with virtual shoulder shrugging, with the odd bout of positivity.

@elliott1301 posted: “I’d absolutely love for Wednesday to surprise us all with a performance like the Cardiff match a few weeks ago. Just absolutely smashing them in. Can’t believe we still could do the impossible.”

But @matt_h4 countered: “How ******* jammy have we got by taking it down to the final game of the season. ONE game for our players to finally give us a performance that means something. Just one that's all we ask for. In with a fighting chance. Come on Wednesday.”

@AshFinney1 said: “I fully expect Saturday to go something like this.. Wednesday finally win a game after going 1-0 down for the first time since 2019 only for George Hirst to come on for Rotherham and score last kick of the game to win them the game and send us down.”

@RocketOwl1986 added: “So we win and Rotherham don’t we stay up. Amusing we even have a chance to stay up with how pathetic we’ve been all season. Anyone fancy us to beat Derby? Nah me neither. Team of bottlers and milky teas.”

@Jordanswfcno1 offered a similar response: “we all know we will bottle it saturday. 11 players on pitch and most are spineless, theyve bottled it preety much every big game weve had in last 5 year. saturday wont be any different.”

@TomSheltonAgent said: “How we still have a chance of staying up is madness. We’ve given a massive lifeline which we all know we won’t take but we can hope! UTO”

@Jinja_Owl summed it up simply with, “How the f*** are we not relegated yet?”

@top7664 can’t quite believe it: “Unbelievable that after the biggest s***show of a season I’ve ever seen we’ve still a chance.”

And @matttheowl offered perhaps the most poetic reaction with, “One more slice in the death by a thousand cuts.”
