The Owls face Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon in their first Championship game of the 2020/21 season, and will be eager to start chipping away at the 12-point deduction that they find themselves saddled with.

Garry Monk’s first prize will be three points at Cardiff City Stadium, but history suggests that it won’t be an easy task – Wednesday haven’t won away against The Bluebirds since Deon Burton and Leon Clarke secured a 2-1 victory back in 2007.

In general, Wednesday’s record against Cardiff in recent years doesn’t make particularly pretty viewing, with the Owls winning just two of their last 13 meetings, although they’ve lost just one of the last nine. There have been a lot of draws.

A quickfire early double from Robert Glatzel and Junior Hoilett made sure Saturday’s hosts won the last encounter between the two – another 2-1 – but it was a first win for the Bluebirds over the Owls since they won four in a row between April 2010 and September 2014.

In total the record between the two sides is very tight, with Cardiff slightly edging matters having picked up 27 wins to Wednesday’s 26, and 18 of the 71 matches ending with the spoils shared – interestingly they’ve only ever met once in a cup competition, a 2-1 Owls win in the FA Cup back in 1948.

Another thing history suggests is that this game has goals in it, with only four meetings since their first encounter (a 1-0 Cardiff win in 1920) ending in a goalless draw, and both teams have scored at least once in nine of the last 14 matches between the two.

Wednesday go into this one on the back of knocking Walsall out of the Carabao Cup via a penalty shootout, while Cardiff were surprisingly booted out of the competition by Northampton Town who humbled them with a 3-0 victory at the PTS Academy Stadium last weekend.
