Their promotion push is now hanging by a thread after a run of just one victory from their last seven Championship matches.

Some critics have questioned manager Garry Monk's decision-making following the downturn in the team's results. His team selection and tactics have come under fire in some quarters because Wednesday have dropped from third to 11th in the space of six weeks.

"We (managers) always make mistakes," he told The Star. “No one is perfect.

"Mistakes happen. That's life.

"Everyone can reflect after a game but my job is to make decisions before they happen. You always try to make those decisions with the best intentions.

"Everyone can be a manager after the game and say 'this or that could have been done better' but it is done. You have to have the confidence and trust in yourself to make decisions before they happen.

"As a manager, I don't get the luxury of hindsight.

"My job is to reflect afterwards.

"Every decision I ever make is out of honesty and what I have felt is right for that moment.

"I will always do things with the right intention and what is best for the team."

Monk remains confident his team can get their season back on track, starting with a trip to second-from-bottom Barnsley.

He said: "They (the players) have already shown they are capable of doing that in this league and going on a consistent run.

"We need to show it again but I am included in that. We all have a responsibility for that.

"My team selections and stuff like that are crucial. It is then for the players to deliver their own performances within that team.

"It is a collective responsibility but one thing is for sure we will stick together.

"We are all going to fight through it and the ones that can fight the hardest will play and we will try and give them the opportunity to show it."
