Paterson, signed from Cardiff City in midweek, is one of four changes made by the Owls boss for the visit of the Hoops – with Liam Shaw, Adam Reach and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru also all starting.

But the big news from S6 is that Dominic Iorfa and Izzy Brown are both missing.

They are understood to have picked up knocks, while Liam Palmer and Elias Kachunga drop to the bench.

Writing on Twitter, our Wednesday correspondent, Joe Crann, said: “Big opportunity for Adam Reach to show what he’s about as a LWB - which is potentially his best position to be honest. Hoping for a good afternoon for Shaw and Dele-Bashiru, too.”

This is how Wednesdayites on Twitter have reacted to the team news.

@hoppo_swfc Iorfa and Brown are big misses but I still fancy us today. #GlassHalfFull #swfc

@hirstysboots After the international break we’re pretty much playing two games a week until and beyond Xmas so team changes will become the norm - so we all need to get used to ‘favourites’ not playing. Come on Wednesday, 3-0!

@Finswfc No Iorfa or Brown. Oh God.

@JT__WAWAW Everyone worried about Iorfa and I’m just worried that Monk still considers Reach to be a footballer

@woodyrw1984 Time for the players coming in to take their chance and stake a claim for a place in the starting 11. I admit that defence looks a little lightweight.

@bazzabannan25 needs to make sure we win the midfield battle and deliver an end product for the front two.

@GrantR_1867 Step up Liam Shaw and Dele-Bashiru

@DirtyLyle No Dom Iorfa? Ominous?

@harrietglaves1 Is Matt Penney injured? Just don’t get why he isn’t in the team #swfc
