Wednesday secured a 2-0 victory over Exeter at St James Park on Saturday, with Adam Reach and Callum Paterson getting the goals in what was ultimately a professional display from the COVID-hit Championship outfit.
With Neil Thompson having tested positive for Coronavirus, it was left to academy coach, Andy Holdsworth, to lead the team in the tie, with a number of youngsters featuring in the game after the Owls were only able to name three outfield substitutes.

Speaking after the match he said, “I just wanted us to be better, but for whatever reason we weren’t… That was a real big opportunity, no disrespect to Sheffield Wednesday because they had a really good team out there, but we still created enough opportunities and got the ball in the right place often enough to win that game…
“I was so disappointed with the way the game went… It started off well and everyone was on the front foot, but it’s easy to play to your absolute maximum when things are going your way. You learn the most about yourself, myself included, when things are going against you. I didn’t like what it turned us into.”
It was Wednesday’s first ever win at St James Park, and the Owls are now five games unbeaten in all competitions as they go into this weekend’s tie against Coventry City in the Championship.
