No definite deadline, but season ticket refunds remain Sheffield Wednesday's top priority

The wait for a season ticket refund for matches lost to the coronavirus crisis in the 2019/20 campaign goes on for many Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

Over 8,000 refund applications were accepted by the club after Wednesday rolled out one of the more extensive rebate options in the Championship back in June.

The process is being treated by ticket office staff, who are having to contact each of those 8,000 supporters – 55 per cent of the club’s season ticket fanbase – individually. The Star understands that all of these staff have recently returned from furlough and that the club are treating the issue as their very top off-field priority.

The process is well underway but has taken longer than the club anticipated after they received more refund applications than they expected. The implementation of a new ticketing system has also held up their progress.

It has been reiterated that there will be no problem in the club paying the refunds and that everyone who applied will receive their money in full. To date the club, though, been unable to provide a definite deadline as to when.

Supporters who were originally told to expect their refunds by the end of October, within 60 days of the rebate deadline closing. Many have voiced their displeasure at the delay to the club and on social media.

In a statement issued to The Star late last month Trevor Braithwait, Director of Communications at the club, said: “Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday would like thank supporters for their understanding and are very sorry for the delay.

“The main reason many are experiencing issues is because of the new ticketing system implemented. Everybody who applied can be rest assured to receive refunds.

“It remains difficult to contact all supporters on an individual basis, and whilst there is a desire to process all rebates as soon as possible, we cannot provide a definite deadline.

“Some other clubs are experiencing the same difficulties as we are.”

Indeed the situation is not unique to Wednesday, with a handful of clubs in the Championship and beyond having experienced similar delays in administering their refund and rebate process.
