'No approach' from Sheffield Wednesday for former Wigan boss Paul Cook

And one man yet to hear anything from the club is early bookies’ favourite Paul Cook, The Star understands.

The former Wigan boss, who left the Latics at the end of last season after narrowly failing to save them from a relegation campaign ravaged by a cruel points deduction, is not believed to be one of the managers ‘sounded out’ by the Owls as of yet.

Cook, who has also enjoyed great success at Chesterfield and Portsmouth, was a name on the lips of many supporters immediately after news of Monk’s sacking was confirmed and would present a popular choice.

The 53-year-old, who recently admitted he is ‘desperate’ to get back into management at Championship level, has fallen behind in the bookies’ odds today.

It is believed a handful of potential candidates, including former Bristol City boss Lee Johnson and newly installed bookies’ favourite Tony Pulis, have been sounded-out for the role to one degree or another.

Reports from The Star columnist Alan Biggs on Tuesday evening confirmed earlier whispers from sources close to Cook that the boss was yet to have been approached by the Hillsborough club.

Cook played his part of a high-profile falling out with recent Owls signing Josh Windass during their time at Wigan, prompting fears that his appointment could see his £500k fee effectively written off just weeks after his signing. It is not known whether that is a factor.
