And it’s pretty much the same for football fans when our favourite player decides to up sticks and opts for pastures new.
We’ve all been there, haven’t we?
So, when we asked Owls fans to tell us which idols broke your hearts when they quit S6 you didn’t disappoint.
Here’s nine Wednesday players who have left the Hillsborough faithful heartbroken when they moved on – or, in some cases, were sold by the club.
1. David Hirst
Matthew Young on prolific striker Hirst joining Southampton in October 1997: "I remember seeing my brother in town after work on a Friday and he told me we'd sold him to Southampton. Yes, he wasn't the same player as at his prime but still gutting." Photo: JPI Media
2. Dan Petrescu
On the Romanian full-back joining Chelsea in 1995 after just one season at S6, Ashley Bolton on Twitter says: "When I was about 10 years old I had his name put on my Wednesday shirt about three weeks before (he left). I was so upset." Photo: Shaun Botterill
3. Chris Brunt
Brunt's departure for West Bromwich Albion in 2007 devastated Wednesday fans, with BartyOwl on Twitter saying: "I was gutted when we sold Chris Brunt. I understood why he was sold but he’s the last real talent, other than Antonio, I recall us selling in recent years." Brett Oldfield, also on Twitter, writes: "Chris Brunt, I swore it’d be the last time I ever got attached to a player." Photo: Jonathan Gawthorpe
4. Paul Warhurst
The versatile Warhurst leaving for Blackburn Rovers in 1993 certainly left Wednesdayites unhappy, including Kat on Twitter who says: "We made him as a striker. Was so excited watching him. Then he took off to sodding Blackburn. Gutted." Alex McGreevy, also on Twitter, agrees. "I was devastated. He should have stayed. He could have been a lethal striker." Photo: Getty Images
