Luke Cox, Luke Jackson, Charlie Reaney, Lewis Farmer, Charles Hagan and Declan Thompson are the players to have been trusted with a pro deal heading into the 2020/21 season.

Wednesday academy manager Steve Haslam said: “It’s always positive to see young players who’ve come right through the system sign professional deals.

“It’s a proud day for them and their families, it’s not an easy thing to achieve so for them to be recognised in this way is a big step for them.

“Their next task is to get in and around the first team, as Ciaran and some of the other Under-23s did on Wednesday night, with there being short gaps between games it may bring opportunities for them.”

Asked about the young players set to sign new deals, first team boss Garry Monk told The Star last month: “The first thing is that they deserve those contracts… I’ve said before that I’ve tried to come in here and assess all the young lads and have them training. A few have made it into the first team this season, and I think that's a bigger picture thing.

“I'm going to the club and trying to promote those academy players, and they've done well this season, that's why they’ve received those contracts. But then, of course, the other side of it is also to be prepared for anything, and if there are issues with players in the first team environment, then we have people that can step in.”
