The father of teenage defender, Declan Thompson, confirmed this week that the 17-year-old had signed his first pro deal at Hillsborough after stepping through the ranks from the U18s through to the U23s, and it appears that others are set to follow.

It is thought that a group of players from the Owls’ youth structures have been offered deals, and the Star understands that 18-year-old defender, Luke Cox, and teenage goalkeeper, Luke Jackson (also 18), are among those that could commit their futures to the club.

Wednesday’s youth enjoyed a fine 2018/19 season as the U18s went all the way to win both the North and National title last season, and already players such as Alex Hunt and Osaze Urhoghide have made the step up in 2019/20 to make their senior debuts.

This season hadn’t been as strong for the young Owls, currently eighth in the U18 Professional Development League, however they did beat Burnley 4-1 in their last game before games were stopped.

There has, however, been no word on the futures of first-team players such as Steven Fletcher, Morgan Fox, Fernando Forestieri and others who will be out of contract at the end of the season, though things have been put on hold because of the football standstill caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
