A fresh new feeling has enveloped Sheffield Wednesday as they press on with preparations for their season opener at Cardiff on Saturday, according to Kadeem Harris.

The wide man, who has successfully adapted to a wing-back since the Owls’ switch to a 3-5-2 system, started out on the left-hand side before switching to the right as his side booked their place in the Carabao Cup second round after a penalty shootout win at Walsall on Saturday.

And speaking to The Star, Harris explained that the move from a more advanced position was one he has taken to swiftly.

“I played half a season at wing-back at Cardiff before I came to Sheffield Wednesday, so I had a little bit of experience in that position,” he said.

“It's a position that I like, I like defending one on one and I like attacking one on one and you find yourself in those positions more as a wing-back. I've got to do a little more work defensively in my shape but that will come with games.

“I feel like I've already improved a lot. I like the position, in truth I'd play any position to get some wins and fly up the table hopefully.”

Harris is one of several players to have benefited from extended sessions based on Wednesday’s defensive structure following the addition of Monk’s trusted backroom staff Andrew Hughes and James Beattie.

Including their 0-0 pre-season draw against Premier League Leicester City, they are yet to concede a goal, something that Harris puts down partly to an increased intensity brought about by the new men.

He said: “Bully and Nicky were brilliant last year but now we've got some new faces in and it's refreshing, there's a bit more intensity in the training because with new coaches everybody wants to impress in training. They're good all-round. They'll bring some good things to the team and the set-up moving forward and that will go into the season as well.

“They've settled in very well. They had initiation songs as well, theirs were impressive to be fair, better than the players!”
