More signings as Mandaric backs Irvine

MILAN Mandaric is backing Alan Irvine to lead the Owls back up the League One table and planning to strengthen the manager's hand.

The chairman confirmed that the aim is to bring in "two or three" more new players before next week's closure of the transfer window.

Mandaric also told The Star that is he confident the club, now 12th in the table, can recover from their sticky patch.

Irvine has come in for criticism from some fans after the 4-0 defeat at Leyton Orient.

But Mandaric is preaching togetherness and urging supporters to back the manager and the team as the Owls face Yeovil at Hillsborough tonight bidding to revive their promotion campaign.

"We need to get back in the race," said the chairman. "We're going to bring in.two or three more players. This is not the time to panic or point fingers.

"It's time to stick together and give support to each other. That is what I ask from supporters.

"I know it's a difficult time. I know a lot of people aren't happy. The solution is for us to stick together and correct the situation."

Mandaric also believes it is important that the team leave League One behind:

"This is too big a club. We should be in the Championship and looking up from there," he said.

Irvine said: "I'm not daft. I know that kind of result will put me under scrutiny.

"I work extremely hard. I'm not saying it guarantees you success, but it gives you a better chance, I believe.

"We were all in on Sunday and I worked quite a lot of hours, as usual. I spent a bit of time with my kids and a lot of time working."

He said that he and Mandaric had a chat on Sunday evening: "We agreed that it was a very bad result and the second half was very poor."

"My job wasn't discussed. We talked about the result and the performance and what the reasons might have been."
